OMAR AL-HAMAD

Syria General Director

A Syrian national with extensive experience of the Syrian Oil & Gas industry with a long and distinguished career at Syrian Petroleum Company (“SPC”) originally focusing on technical and engineering roles.

Omar Served as Deputy General Manager at SPC between 1997 and 2008 and as General Manager between 2008 and 2015.

Degree in Petroleum Engineering from Al-Baath University.

FAISAL WASSOUF

Technical Manager

Over 20 years extensive international experience in the oil and gas industry.

Faisal has notable experience in reservoir studies and management, economic studies, project and resources management, corporate planning  and business development.

He was formerly Project Leader in Suncor Syria and Project Leader and Business Development for Schlumberger International in Malaysia, Brunei and the Philippines.

Degree in Petroleum Engineering from Al-Baath University.

MARTIN ARCH

Group Financial Controller

Martin has wide ranging and extensive knowledge of the oil and gas exploration and production sector, having formerly held executive roles at PetroMaroc Corporation Plc and Sterling Energy plc. He has supported exploration and production projects over a period of more than 10 years in a broad range of environments, including Syria, Kurdistan, Morocco, Mauritania, Gabon, Madagascar, Cameroon, Colombia, and the US.

Previously, Martin worked at KPMG, where he gained experience across a range of organisations and sectors in audit and advisory functions.

Martin holds a BSc (Hons) degree in Geography & Geology from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. He joined Gulfsands as Group Financial Controller in September 2016.

LUIS FERNANDO CASTANO

Country Manager – Colombia

Colombian citizen with extensive experience in the Oil & Gas industry generally and Exploration and Production Projects.

Prior to joining Gulfsands Luis Fernando worked with Maurel et Prom as its Syria Country Manager and prior to that he had a very long and successful career working in Colombia with Hocol S.A in various roles including as Operational Engineer, Reservoir Engineer, Operations Manager, Project Leader, Production Fields Leader and Joint Venture Leader.

Graduated from the National University of Colombia, Faculty of Mines in Medellin, with a degree in Petroleum Engineering followed by further studies at the SMU-COX University, Dallas Texas, USA and a Finance Specialist Degree from the Jorge Tadeo Lozano school in Bogota Colombia.

NATALIA SUAREZ

Corporate Counsel – Colombia

A locally qualified lawyer with considerable experience working in Colombia’s Mining and Hydrocarbons sectors.

Prior to joining Gulfsands Natalia worked with a number of Canadian companies with interests in Colombia’s oil and gas sector and as a consequence has considerable experience working with the ANH’s Exploration and Production contracts and negotiating and supervising a broad range of legal and commercial agreements relevant to the energy sector.

Graduated from the University of Santos Tomas in Bucaramanga with a Law degree and a post graduate degree focused on Mining and Energy Law.

MONGI HAFFOUZ

General Manager – North Africa

Tunisian national with many years of Oil and Gas management experience including assignments in Tunisia, USA and Gabon West Africa. Mongi spent 18 years with Marathon Oil including in the role of Chief Negotiator for the formation of Maretap – the JV between Marathon and the ETAP. Mr. Haffouz is particularly well known for his senior roles with Marathon in Tunisia from 1983 -1996.

Subsequent to his work with Marathon, Mongi also served as Vice President and General Manager (Tunisian Branch) of Voyageur Oil and Gas Corporation, where he established & oversaw the Company’s operations in Tunisia and was instrumental in raising over $16 million of new investment for the Company’s activities in Tunisia.

Mongi is widely known and respected across the Middle East and North Africa for his work as a consultant to the oil and gas sector in the MENA region.
